The Scottish Conservatives have been unrelenting in our calls for action to save jobs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rishi Sunak and the UK Government have provided a comprehensive and unprecedented package of support during the outbreak. This includes measures like the Job Retention Scheme, which has been extended until the end of September 2021, as well as a scheme to support self-employed people a number of programmes to give businesses loans and guarantees.
This support has ensured that families across Scotland have been able to put food on the table.
The UK Treasury have also provided billions of pounds extra for the Scottish budget. But the SNP have repeatedly failed to get this much needed cash out the door to businesses - with many funds taking too long to open and businesses still waiting for support and for grant applications to be processed.
And with their disappointing so-called ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown, the SNP have left businesses out in the cold.
The Scottish Conservatives have put forward proposals to break this administrative logjam and get funding to businesses now. A 10-day turnaround guarantee and expanding the grants available would be a welcome first step towards restoring business confidence, which has hit rock bottom.
Jobs and businesses are never the priority for the SNP. But if they win a majority at the upcoming election, our economic recovery will be completely sidelined in favour of another divisive independence referendum, which Nicola Sturgeon has said she wants to hold as soon as this year.
Once again, I thank you for taking the time to contact me on this issue.
