Local MSP Maurice Golden has challenged the SNP Government to set an example when it comes to using single-use plastic cups.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP pointed out to SNP Rural Affairs Minister Mairi Gougeon MSP that the SNP Government had gone through a plastic cup every single minute over the last three years, having purchased 1.5 million cups.
That is despite the SNP Government pledging to introduce a charge for single use plastic cups in their recent Budget agreement.
In response to Mr Golden, Mairi Gougeon agreed that the SNP Government needed to set an example and promised that she would look into the matter for him.
Mr Golden, who first revealed the 1.5 million figure at the end of 2018, says it is time for the SNP Government to back up their warm words with action on single use of plastic cups.
Commenting Maurice Golden MSP said: “The SNP regularly talk a good game when it comes to cutting plastic usage but the reality is that they are still using an extraordinary amount of plastic cups.
“We can’t have them lecturing people and businesses about over usage of plastic, when they are going through them every single minute.
“The response from Mairi Gougeon today was positive and I hope it can herald a start of direct action when it comes to cutting down on plastic cups.
“We must all do our bit to combat the scourge of plastic and the SNP Government can take a lead on this front.
“The Scottish Conservatives have proposed building a recycling facility for plastic which would go a long way to help protect the environment and also help create jobs.”
